Norwich is running a road sign and traffic cone amnesty on the weekend of 10 and 11 July 2010, encouraging students in Norwich to hand over and avoid punishment.
Students at the University of East Anglia (UEA) can bring any signs or cones they have acquired during the last year to the security lodge at UEA and no further action will be taken.
PCSO Hannah Alexander from University and Eaton safer neighbourhood team said “We are aware that some young people may get over zealous on a night out in the city where they think at the time it is a good idea to take a road sign or traffic cone. This is the chance for those studying at the UEA to come forward with the items which can then be returned to their owners. However if we find any such items during the summer or next term, the Dean of Students Office will be informed and an offence of theft may be looked into. We agreed with the university that this weekend would be best as we are aware students will be leaving Norwich for the summer holidays or they will be graduating.”
Security Manager at the UEA Nick Jope said “We are pleased to be working with the police for this initiative and hope that many students will use the opportunity to return items which can be quite expensive. We have found many items such as signs, vehicle number plates and traffic cones left behind in student’s rooms once they have moved out. By handing them over during this weekend they can avoid potentially being prosecuted.”
