DDA Ahead

Gardiner Security’s Access Control division reports record sales in 2003.

Gardiner Security’s Access Control division reports record sales in 2003 and has seen first quarter sales for 2004 trounce all previous records – even before the start of what is expected to be a very busy period, thanks to the enactment of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) from October 1.

Pointing to the main reasons for the division’s current success, Gardiner’s national sales manager for Access Control products Geoff Aitken cites a number of factors, from the continued growth of the market to Gardiner’s own performance: "Because of security requirements, online door entry for the commercial sector using systems such as proximity has grown considerably, and as a distributor of most of the leading manufacturers, Gardiner can offer independent advice and on site assistance in optimising the most cost effective solutions for our customers. At the same time, our sales team has been expanded and strengthened through the appointment of a number of key experienced sales engineers, all of whom have had and will have a major impact on our success."

For 2004, Gardiner is focusing the minds of customers and suppliers on the new Disabled Discrimination Act, which will have a sizeable impact on access control. From October, anyone disabled – including people who use wheelchairs, or who are blind or partially sighted, who are deaf, or who have arthritis or long-term illnesses or learning disabilities ‘ cannot be restricted from gaining access to a site to obtain goods or services. With importance not only to Gardiner’s Access Control division but also its Fire division, for example in induction loops, the distributor is working with its suppliers to ensure full conformance to the Act, including the creation of appropriate definitions. "Security is high on everyone’s priority at present. Ensuring that access to a building is only granted to authorised personnel is now even more vital. This, combined with the implementation of the DDA, promises to make it a very busy year all round," says Geoff Aitken.
