Guiding Your Way

The EXITi from Hoyles Electronic Developments is an electrical way guidance system. Two flashing LEDs, green and red, are housed in a polycarbonate enclosure to project a focused beam of light along a corridor for escapees to follow in order to exit a building by the shortest route. A microcontroller reduces power consumed by the three AA size alkaline batteries enabling a life span of five to six years, the manufacturer reports. Unlike hard-wired and retro-fitted electrical systems which create disruption and are costly to install, EXITi Way Guidance units are screwed onto the wall at or below dado rail height. No connection is required to central controls or power supplies. When fitted at four to five metre intervals the green LED?s will provide guidance through dense smoke that would normally be unsurviveable, say Hoyles. EXITi units each offer way guidance at about one tenth of the cost of traditional centrally powered hard wired systems and are more economical and effective than photoluminescent systems, the maker argues. A multi-lingual fire action sign in English, French, German and Italian is provided enabling EXITi to be used in hotels and other buildings with foreign visitors.
