Optical Keypad

by msecadm4921

TDSi has launched Optica (Patent Pending) optical keypad in the access control market.

Optica incorporates a built-in proximity card reader and works by using optical components to detect the presence of a finger. Optica is more reliable than traditional touch-type keypads, the makers claim, as it has no moving keys to wear out or sabotage and can be used both indoors and outdoors. As well as the standard version, an aesthetic vandal-resistant stainless-steel version is also available.

Finger detection using optical components is achieved in normal indoor light but reliability in other conditions can be problematic. With Optica, TDSi has developed patent pending algorithms for overcoming diverse lighting conditions, such as the effect of sunlight through leaves on a windy day. The technology is weather proof and operates within a temperature range of -20 to +50 degrees centigrade making it suitable for almost any environment the firm says. Blue background lighting also makes the keys easy to find in the dark.

Optica is being used by the Ministry of Defence. It allows access control systems to achieve Class 4 security as defined by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) publication Security Classification of Access Control Systems

‘Optica is an example of TDSi’s ability to combine innovative technology, scalability, aesthetics and functionality to improve business efficiency and future-proof security for our customers,’ explains Simon Holt, Marketing Manager, TDSi. ‘The long-term reliability and cost effectiveness gained through Optica’s lack of moving parts and the added durability of the vandal-resistant stainless steel version, limit the potential for disruption to the equipment and the need for regular repair or replacement.’
The product uses industry-standard interfaces and is compatible, the firm says, with controllers from a wide range of manufacturers, making it a solution for new installations as well as for companies looking to upgrade their existing system. Optica readers are designed for quick and easy installation, the makers say, either to a solid surface or onto a standard UK single-plate switch box.

With the breadth of TDSi’s product range, customers can start with basic systems and with minimal disruption, develop this over time into a fully integrated security system, the makers claim. Optica is an addition to TDSi’s range of security management and access control solutions; including the compact Mifare smartcard reader, biometric readers and TDSi’s Microcard swipe technology.
