Surreys POCA Panel

by msecadm4921

Surrey-based community crime fighting projects could get a funding boost, thanks to a new scheme launched in August by Surrey Police.

Under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) Surrey Police is able to get back some of the assets confiscated from criminals. These funds can now be used to put cash back into communities.

Applications can be made by any Surrey-based organisation, whether from the public, private or voluntary sector, in support of a community initiative that reduces crime, fear of crime or helps combat anti-social behaviour.

The force’s new POCA Panel will now sit twice a year to consider funding bids from local crime fighting projects, awarding grants to successful organisations of between £300 and £5,000. The closing date for the first round of applications for funding is Friday, 16 September 2011. The results will be announced in October 2011.

Detective Inspector Jo Hayes, who is leading on the project, said: “The new POCA funding scheme is taking the cash out of crime and giving it back to local communities.

“We are looking for applications to fund initiatives affecting community groups of more than 20 people that will make a difference to crime reduction, community safety and/or the community’s fear of crime. Applications from projects concerned with tackling anti-social behaviour, drugs and alcohol-related crime and promoting a sense of confidence and satisfaction within the local community are particularly welcome.”
