Yorkshire Door Checks

by msecadm4921

West Yorkshire Police are checking to ensure that door staff are registered under the Private Security Industry Act (PSIA).

Bradford South Division (which covers Bradford city centre) in March was piloting checks on door supervisors as part of an initiative which aims to help reduce violent and alcohol-related crime in town and city centres.

A West Yorkshire force spokeswoman gave Professional Security Magazine the latest figures available; namely that 11 bars and clubs werre checked, and of 35 door staff checked all complied.

There are 2,200 registered door staff across the county and following the Bradford pilot, which will also include licensing checks, the enforcement operation will be rolled out across West Yorkshire.

What they say

PC Mick Warburton, the Force’s Licensing Officer, said: “The use of rogue supervisors in licensed premises across West Yorkshire will not be tolerated. It is not only illegal but can contribute to crime and disorder. It is only fair to registered door supervisors that the law is enforced. Door supervisors at the many nightclubs and bars across the county are regarded as an integral part of dealing with violent crime and it is imperative that we engage in partnership with such personnel.”

The force reports that a number of excellent partnerships with the SIA already exist in West Yorkshire – SIA registered staff are used as taxi marshals as an early intervention tactic for disorder in town and city centres.

Ring about doors

The public are also a valuable source of information and police urge them to report any potential breaches of the law or conduct of concern associated with door supervisors. The public can either ring West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606 and ask for their local licensing officer or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
