With only three weeks left to the British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) Information Destruction (ID) conference and exhibition on May 30 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, the BSIA is reminding companies operating in the information destruction sector of the importance of keeping one step ahead of the issues affecting their business.
Anthony Pearlgood, Chairman of the BSIA’s Information Destruction section, says: “Changes to the EU Directive on Data Protection as well as a tougher stance by the Information Commissioner’s Office on data breaches by organisations such as the NHS are all signs that attitudes are changing and complacency is not justified any longer when it comes to handling confidential waste.”
He adds: “Whilst this provides some opportunities for our sector to take the lead and educate users on the importance of confidential waste strategies, challenges such as tight budgets for customers and fierce competition in the industry still heavily affect the Information Destruction market. It is therefore now more important than ever for ID providers to keep abreast of changes and challenges.”

Speakers have been confirmed:
Martin Hutchins, Cambridge Professional Academy, “Modern Media Marketing” – Building on last year’s session on sales and marketing, this year Martin will be addressing the audience on the subject of gaining business via “social connections”. Providing practical and hands-on hints and tips, he will be looking at why social network development is so important in business, and how delegates can best harness the rapidly evolving arena of online social media.
David John Symmers, Consultant, “Recovered Paper – a mature material in an ever changing market” – David has nearly 40 years of experience working in the recovered paper industry, including senior positions at the Independent Waste Paper Producers Ltd and the European Recovered Paper Association (ERPA). At a time when recycling and environmental concerns are high on the agenda of customers as well as ID providers themselves, David’s topical presentation will cover market conditions and trends in recovered paper.
Mark Wormald, Sandler Training, “Break the rules and win more business” – Mark has spent the last 25 years in sales and sales management in both the corporate and SME worlds, and has run three businesses of his own. His presentation will help delegates tackle any sales challenges that are worth fixing to improve margins, improve market share and grow business. He will do this by providing new strategies, tactics and insights to get results.
Charles Whelan, HW Corporate Finance, “Optimising business values” – Over the last 20 years Charles has completed a wide range of disposals, capital raisings, mergers and acquisitions, management buyouts and buy-ins where he has led customers through the initial marketing, negotiation, agreement of terms and completion. In an industry which is increasingly consolidating, he will be sharing his expertise on the acquisition process and what to consider when companies are thinking about selling.
The conference programme will conclude with the traditional Question and Answer session with a panel, who will be taking questions from the audience and tackling issues such as industry performance in the current economic climate, and changes and developments in customer requirements.
