The University of Manchester appointed the Scottish security installer Scotshield to maintain its CCTV and security systems, after a tender process. Work began in October 2011, with maintenance work carried out on more than 300 CCTV cameras on campus, with upgrades of the previous system. The installer reports that many of the university buildings present a security challenge, such as the Stopford Building, home to the faculty of medicine with ground floor corridors stretching over a cumulative half mile in distance.
During term time the university is like a city within a city, with more than 39,000 students roaming the campus on a daily basis, in addition to more than 10,700 members of staff. The uni stretches along one of the biggest and busiest roads in Manchester, where its CCTV are housed on buildings up to 18 storeys high to monitor day-to-day activity. Besides installing and maintaining security systems on the main campus, Scotshield also maintain CCTV in the university’s cultural landmarks including The Manchester Museum, the Jodrell Bank Observatory and The Whitworth Art Gallery.

“Scotshield provide us with ongoing upgrades and maintenance, and liaise closely with our security team on a daily basis. Having a professional system like this in place makes monitoring more than 700 acres of campus that bit easier.”

Scotshield has also been awarded the intruder alarm systems contract for the University of Manchester. Scotshield employs more than 200 people across the UK, with offices in Warrington, London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Belfast, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness.
