Dog and handler award

by Mark Rowe

The National Association of Security Dog Users (NASDU) was contacted by Roger Kember of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals (WCoSP) last year. WCoSP presents an annual award to a police, and military, dog and handler; and for 2013 the Company sought to include a dog and handler from the private sector. NASDU received confirmation from Don Randall MBE of the Dog of the Year Award Committee that the Company wanted to inaugurate the award and present it to the NASDU Trials Champion of its annual security dog trials. The awards were presented to the handlers and dogs by Brian Hughes, the Company Master, pictured right, and the Sheriff of London, Adrian Waddingham, at their Common Hall Meeting in the City of London, at Saddlers’ Hall on November 27. The civil division award went to Stefan Leca and his dog Yuko; the police and military winners were the Dog Section of the Police Service of Northern Ireland; and 4 Squadron RAF Police.

In the Police Division all eligible constabularies, submit their nomination(s) of dogs and handlers or a team nomination to the Police Dog Working Group of the ACPO General Purposes Committee who will select no more than nine nominations to forward to the Award Judging Panel of the WCosSP.

In the Military Division, each Service can submit up to three pairs of dogs and handlers or a unit nomination to the Award Judging Panel of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals to be considered for the Award.
