Scots body-worn video

by msecadm4921

Scottish Communications Group (SCG), the Perth-based CCTV and security installer, has an order from Grampian Police for body-worn surveillance equipment, which it is hoped will lead to more contracts from other Scottish police forces.

The order for 330 ‘Videobadge’  CCTV units will provide Grampian officers with the ability to provide potentially crucial evidence through clear and accurate recorded digital video. After a pilot of the body-worn video cameras in Aberdeen over the past 18 months, the scheme is now being rolled out across other areas of Grampian region. It is the first force in Scotland to equip its officers with the equipment. The new cameras, which are worn on the upper body, are smaller and lighter than a mobile phone and have so far been used as part of a range of police work including city centre patrols and other specific operations.

The cameras are used in an overt manner so that all are aware of their presence and Grampian praised the system for its evidence-gathering ability. The cameras have helped bring about earlier guilty pleas – which mean officers are able to spend less time in court and more time on the beat. The cameras also provide more protection to officers and add to officer transparency.

SCG has supplied similar body-worn CCTV systems for parking attendants in Perth and Glasgow, who have used the products for settling parking disputes and have seen a decline in verbal abuse from motorists.

Paul Gibson, managing director of SCG, said: “We are delighted to have secured this order from Grampian Police. The body-worn CCTV system is now proving its worth in a number of different arenas and is playing a major role in community safety.”
