Some 3,700 people requested an application to become Met Police Community Support Officers. The PCSO recruitment drive, which began on February 24, has attracted a huge response, the force says.
The Met is seeking to recruit around 500 PCSOs by September 2012 to support borough policing across London. The new recruits will take the place of PCSOs who have started training to become police constables.
PCSOs mainly work in Safer Neighbourhoods teams across the capital. The Met says that the officers play an important role in policing, providing a highly visible presence, deterring criminals and meeting people regularly.
Assistant Commissioner Simon Byrne said: “This is good news for Londoners. We are working hard to increase the numbers of staff we commit to neighbourhood policing across London in the coming months.”
