American Fibertek (AFI Ltd) has introduced a range of twisted pair cable interfaces that offer installers an alternative to coax cabling, the manufacturers report. The interfaces, known as baluns, enable standard CCTV cameras, monitors and ancillary equipment to be wired using standard unshielded twisted pair cable. In many cases suitable cabling will already be in place from the data or telecomms circuits, AFI say. The baluns are invisible to the CCTV system and do not have any negative effects on the video signal. Once connected via the balun the twisted pair cable can be run alongside power, data or telecomms cables and can even operate over a Cat 5 structured cable system. Installation is by a BNC plug for connection to the CCTV device and the UTP cable is wired into a terminal block on the balun. No set up or other adjustments are necessary, the makers say. Various models are available to suit particular applications including stand-alone modules and rack mounted multiple interface units.
