Mercury Training Services, with Skills for Security (SfS) and JobCentre Plus, is offering funded security training for new entrants into the industry who are unemployed. It covers security guarding, CCTV, door supervision and conflict management and includes:
– a two-week course assessment followed by six weeks security training for successful customers
– training in customer service skills, the ability to work in a team and to solve problems
– for those who successfully complete the course, Mercury Training Services will pay for their first SIA guarding licence.
This eight-week course will be offered at Security House in Worcester starting in January 2013 and SfS are looking for security companies within a 20 mile radius of Worcester, national companies with contracts in the area or organisations that run their own in-house security teams, who will have job vacancies to offer the highly-trained personnel when they finish the course.
Skills for Security also seek employers willing to come and give a 20 minute talk to the groups while they are in training, who can explain about the careers available and the day-to-day realities of working within the security sector.
SfS say that this offers training to a higher level than basic ‘licence to practise’ standards and is designed for people of all ages who want to make a career in security. Strict discipline is maintained throughout the training period to ensure that those who succeed are highly motivated and will approach their first job with a professional attitude.

This training will considerably increase their chances of securing a job in the sector”.
It has already worked in Birmingham and the Black Country where:
– an average of 18 customers have been trained per course
– over 80 interviews have been arranged with various companies
– there have been 50 known job outcomes to date
– 115 SIA licences have been applied for by Mercury Training.
