Avoid fraudsters for Christmas

by Mark Rowe

At the Liverpool One shopping mall, pictured, from Tuesday to Saturday, November 15 to 19, Merseyside Police’s Economic Crime Team officers were giving out advice to the public about how to avoid being a victim of fraud and how to report fraud should you be a victim. They were also speaking to shop assistants in city centre stores and giving them advice on how to identify suspect or counterfeit credit cards.

Detective Sergeant Paul Kay said: “The run up to Christmas is a very busy time and shops and businesses around Liverpool One shopping centre will see thousands of people coming through their doors and money spent at the tills. We want people to be able to do their shopping with peace of mind and know that they are doing all they can to keep their bank accounts safe.

“Our advice to shoppers is to be vigilant when using ATM machines, be careful when you are using free public wi-fi and don’t give your payment card details to unknown sources over the telephone. The best way to spot a counterfeit counter credit card is the quality of the card and its hologram. Also, be wary of UK payment cards that do not have a chip and pin facility.”
