Where is the year going: September

by Mark Rowe

Here we are, in September already, where is the year going?

A couple of updates for you. Firstly, it seems that Doug Gwilliams has left Veracity to join Panasonic. Doug has been in our industry for many years and is well loved and admired. Not many of you will know this but Doug is also a Scout leader. It’s quite surprising how many of us in the industry are involved with the Scouts. I had a picture of Doug from an old Sanyo Christmas party, but sadly I can’t seem to find it; or am I just being kind to him?! You decide. Likewise I visited HIK just the other day only to bump into Hamish from JVC; seems he has left now and moved to the company, who as you will recall from the ‘spotlight’ pages in the June magazine said that they were recruiting. Not surprising – to get back to JVC – as they have decided to pull out of the CCTV market in the UK; well, so I was told. Bring back Yash, eh!

Move from Canon
Also on the move is Samantha Bamford, who has resigned from Canon and is joining a company called Fortinet, in Germany. It seems her partner already lives and works out there for Porsche, funnily enough, so Samantha is moving out there too. Hope the company car is a good one!

Making waves
I mentioned last month that Glenn Fletcher, pictured, has joined Wavestore. It seems he is head of sales not Northern Business manager as I mentioned. Glenn being a true salesman said “I am delighted to have the opportunity to provide leadership for Wavestore’s talented sales team, and I am looking forward to working closely with my colleagues to ensure that we provide consultants, installers, systems integrators and our distribution partners with the best possible pre and post sales support,” do you see what I mean.

In Inner Range
Chantel Smith has joined Inner Range to look after the UK working for Tim Northwood. You may recall that Chantel has been in the industry for a bit now having worked for the likes of HID where she started in 2003, Frontline, Tyco Security Products and more recently with Cathexis. So she has manufacturer and installer experience which sets her up nicely for her new role in Reading.

Three joiners
Axis Communications has made three new appointments to its UK sales and distribution teams. Peter Dempsey joins as a key account manager for the Irish market. Peter has 23 years’ experience of the Irish security industry. He was a key account manager for Panasonic for ten years, managing distribution and system integrator channels and key product launches. Katherine Bramwell joins as a distribution account manager based in Watford. She has over 20 years’ experience in security and IT and was the northern region area sales manager for ADI Global Distribution. Katherine will be managing key distributors. And Mark Egget, a former solutions engineer for software firm Milestone Systems, joins as a sales engineer for south east England. He will be working with the sales team and helping the channel and partners.

Two Steve Greens
]I also mentioned last month that Simon Barnes has been promoted to become the new business development director – access control – EMEA at Genetec, in other words that’s a lot more travelling for Simon but also he tells me that Steve Green has joined them also, which must be confusing for the guys. Why? They have another Steve Green who works out of their Montreal office. I know, imagine two Steve Greens!

New premises
Did someone mention new premises? The Cardiff-based distributors DVS have. Turn to the product pages which start on 88 for their latest catalogue. They have also announced a move to a new building which is huge so I am told but they won’t be moving in there until middle-late September. I have been invited to the launch so will tell you more then, probably month after next.

Charity days
The SSR charity golf day is on Monday, September 21 at West Essex Golf Club, Chingford, London E4 7QL. A challenging I am told 18-hole championship parkland course designed by James Braid, which I hope means more to you golfers than it does to me. All money raised will go to Hostage UK to support them in their important work. The price will be £60 per player, with a concession for four-balls booked at £220. For details email Peter French: [email protected]. And while we’re talking of charity events, although I hope you see the flier with the September print magazine; may I remind you of JSAFE (Joint Security Associations’ Fundraising Event) in London on September 30, a Wednesday evening, in aid of two causes – Child Victims of Crime and The City of London Police Charity for Children.
