ISMA award for Leppard

by Mark Rowe

Adrian Leppard, Commissioner of the City of London Police, has been given a Distinguished Achievement Award by the International Security Management Association (ISMA), in Paris.

The US-based body said the award was for Leppard’s work with the private sector against fraud and cyber crime (where the City is the UK’s lead force), and terrorism (Project Griffin training). Leppard, a 32-year policeman, said: “It is a simple fact that cyber crime and terrorism cannot be defeated without a close synergy between the public and private sectors. The security industry have a great deal to offer and are keen to be more closely involved in tackling these very real threats.”

The association pointed to the commissioner’s work in promoting a closer working relationship between the private and public sectors since becoming commissioner in January 2011.

Mike Mason, ISMA secretary, speaking on behalf of the Award Committee said: “Commissioner Leppard’s outreach to the private sector has been nothing short of outstanding.

“He is attributed with raising the profile of business fraud with UK and EU legislators into a national need for law enforcement to assist the private sector in addressing this crime and prosecuting offenders.

“He has led multiple major initiatives focused on forging a closer relationship with the private sector. One such initiative is Project Griffin which brings together and co-ordinates the resources of the police, other emergency services, local authorities, business and the private sector security industry.

“The initiative develops multi-agency counter terrorism responses harnessing private sector security capability in detecting ‘hostile reconnaissance’ and cordon management.

“Since its inception, over 50,000 people have attended Griffin awareness days hosted and delivered by the City of London Police including over 10,000 private security staff.

“It is now recognised and has been adopted on a national and international scale, an example of such being Project Shield in New York City.”
