Royal Variety performance

by Mark Rowe

That traditional pre-Christmas event for charity, the Royal Variety performance made a return to the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, west London, secured by the crowd management and event security contractor Showsec. It was attended by Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales; and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The show, which raises funds for the Royal Variety Charity, was hosted this year by comedian David Walliams and featured entertainers including Robbie Williams, Sting, Lady Gaga, Diversity and Gary Barlow.

Lorraine Crowther, the Events Co-ordinator for the Royal Variety Charity’s events team, said afterwards: “The Royal Variety Performance 2016 was a great success and we are getting a lot of really wonderful feedback from our guests and supporters. Thank you to Showsec for all your help in the run-up to and on the night of the show, and we hope to perhaps work with you again sometime in the future.

“Your facilitation of the Interval Reception was particularly helpful. Having the extra security presence on the door was a huge help and your team handled it brilliantly.”

Such a prestigious occasion required planning and preparation. Showsec Operations Executive Simon Howard said: “The Royal Variety took place at the Apollo eight years ago, so it was good to have it return after a long time away. This was a one-off special show which put both ourselves and the venue in the spotlight because it was being filmed for broadcast a few days later on ITV.

“Due to the profile of the event and the Royal attendees, a high level of security was required throughout, so stake-holder meetings with ITV, the Metropolitan Police, local authorities and Royal protection began early in the year. It was important to ensure all aspects of the event were carefully planned for. There were three load-in days and two rehearsal days, which is more than any other show we have had before at the Apollo.

“Our 24-hour operation worked well with production to guarantee the tight time schedule was met in the run-up to the event. The show was a great success and we have received praise from organisers, patrons and the press.”
