Business on Brexit

by Mark Rowe

What are the security implications of Brexit? The business body London First has launched a second report in a series on ‘Securing UK Borders’. The report, sponsored by UBM, the owners of the annual IFSEC show, was compiled by London First’s Director of Security and Resilience, Robert Hall, with others: Dr Alison Wakefield, Senior Lecturer in Security Risk Management, University of Portsmouth; Claire Bradley, European Law Monitor CIC; Joe Connell, Director, Praemunitus Ltd Intelligence & Risk Consultants and Chairman of the Association of Security Consultants; and John Vine CBE QPM, former Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration. It covers the security implications of leaving the European Union for UK border management.

The 25-page report that you can read on the London First website has five recommendations:

– Border security should be (re)designed in response to, and proportionate to, foreseen international threats.
– Effective border security should not be undermined by becoming a bargaining chip in Brexit negotiations.
– Every effort should be made to preserve access to key EU databases so as to allow law enforcement and police the means to conduct their investigations for the benefit of all Europeans.
– Adequate resources should be made available to fund the UK Border Force to levels that permit its effective operation in post-Brexit Britain.
– The question of how to establish identity must be revisited.

The report will also feature at a presentation on day three, the Thursday at the three-day IFSEC 2017 exhibition at Excel, in London Docklands from June 20 to 22.
