Commando Spirit appeal

by Mark Rowe

Barrier Millett, pictured, the former Royal Marine now Head of Business Resilience at the energy firm Eon, last year did the ‘yomp’, the ‘Commando Country’ 30-mile hike that you have to pass to join the Marines.

He’s asked us to point out that this year the Commando Spirit Appeal is again on a mission to raise funds for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. The Commando Spirit Series of challenges lets you test yourself against true to life Royal Marines tests. The organisers are now looking for people to sign up.

This year the challenges include: Escape The Dunker, the underwater escape training, the 30-miler Survive The Yomp in the Scottish Highlands and Take The Leap, the commando abseil from buildings across the UK.

In 2012, the challenges included abseiling off the Shard, into the bowl of Twickenham Stadium and from the roof top of St Pancras Station. Organisers will be unveiling 2015 locations shortly.

The Marines – the UK’s Commando Forces and the Royal Navy’s amphibious troops – have just marked their 350th birthday, being founded in the reign of Charles II.
