IFSEC preview

by Mark Rowe

Perimeter security remains a vital part of protecting transport hubs from intruders. Technology advances in alarms, sensors and surveillance are enhancing perimeter security methods to become more sophisticated. Monitoring the security of a site from a centralised location, allows all systems to be integrated meaning that there is less chance of a security breach. However, it is essential that these systems are monitored closely otherwise there is a risk that the system will break down. In February, Brussels Airport fell victim to a diamond heist, where thieves broke through the perimeter fence and drove a getaway vehicle right up to the aircraft. Generating a number of questions relating to why the gates and fences hadn’t been monitored more closely, security since has been stepped up.
Due to the heightened threat in today’s world, the importance of protecting property and assets is paramount to all security strategies. Access gates and fences are now becoming part of wider integrated security systems that trigger alarms when there is a breach of security. Any experiences of where these systems have failed or where a process has been inefficient should be shared throughout the transport security community, leading to a better understanding of how potential threats can be combated. With perimeter security control moving far beyond the staffing of access gates, it’s now increasingly the case that physical and electronic solutions are coming together.
As technology develops at a rapid pace, this is impacting the capabilities of security and fire. It is important that the integration across all sectors is recognised to optimise system potential, ultimately providing more advanced solutions. At IFSEC International, 13 – 16 May at NEC Birmingham, Dave Bentley, General Manager of Security at Gallagher and Richard Jackson, CEO at Jacksons Fencing will be discussing the latest innovations in both these areas during the seminar ‘Perimeter Protection and Intrusion Detection: physical and electronic security in harmony’. Going into detail about the marriage between physical and electronic solutions for perimeter protection, Bentley and Jackson will examine the relationship between the two.
IFSEC International, one of the world’s largest dedicated security events, will bring together the entire security buying chain under one roof at the Birmingham NEC in May. Attracting more than 650 leading solution providers, from 100 countries, IFSEC is the biggest marketplace of its kind.
