A UK manufacturer of custodial products has just completed its first order for prison locks to the Middle East after beating competition from a number of foreign rivals….
Leeds-based Pickersgill-Kaye Ltd won the order for prison locks for its British made Kaye Class 1 cell lock range. To secure the order the company was required to not only quickly airfreight samples but also meet extensive UK export checks and trade agreement rules, as in keeping with supplying security related items to the Middle East.
The initial order is required for the extension of a prison, which for contractual reasons cannot be named, but subject to on-going funding, further sales are anticipated early next year.
This latest order for the manufacturer is for the company’s cell door locks, which are made from a one piece heavy duty solid body and fit all standard cell doors; and tested against 300,000 door and handle operation cycles.
The eight lever lock meets the demanding performance requirements laid down in standard SS317, a Specification for Locks for Custodial Doors. This standard accurately measures the lock’s resistance to wilful damage, physical security, ergonomics and performance in a hostile environment. Equipped with ligature resistant features that help in the provision of safer cells, the locks also provide excellent levels of security and high resistance to damage and wear and tear.
As part of the package the locks were supplied with additional lock-down features enabling if required all locks to be closed with a master key. Servant and master keys have also been supplied in accordance with the customers’ requirements.
Pickersgill-Kaye’s business development manager for security and engineering products, John Moore, said: "Kaye cell locks are in use in a cross-section of UK police custodial cells encompassing a selection of forces from the Metropolitan to Cleveland. However, this is the first order from a prison in the Middle East and we are obviously delighted that they have chosen our products. Custodial cells by their nature are required to accommodate violent and vulnerable detainees and the fact that the Kaye locks are able to resist and withstand all sorts of abuse was a key factor in winning the order."
Pickersgill-Kaye already supplies custodial locks to the Malaysian police and its railway products continue to win orders from European companies including Siemens, Bombardier, Alstom, Irish Rail and CAF, in Asia from companies such as Jiwon Tech and Rotem in Korea, Ocean Eagle Holdings Ltd in Hong Kong and Hitachi in Japan, and in North America from companies such as Axion Technologies and Electro-Motive Diesels.
