A romance scam is a confidence trick involving feigned romantic intentions towards a victim; and it’s the topic of a Fraud Women’s Network event on Thursday, July 28 at the City of London Police, 21 New Street, London EC2M 4TP.
A romance scammer gains a victim,’s affection and then using that goodwill to commit fraud. Fraudulent acts may involve access to the victims’ money, bank accounts, credit cards, passports, e-mail accounts, and/or national identification numbers or by getting the victims to commit financial fraud on their behalf. Romance scams are an insidious crime that lead victims into a trap and makes them believe they are the only ones that can help, say the event organisers. The CTech Unit of the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and Professor Monica Whitty of Leicester University will be giving our Members an insightful overview of this type of crime from a police and psychology perspective.
BBC Crimewatch produced a documentary with SOCA and Humberside Police showing how detectives tracked down the Ghanian fraudster behind an internet and postal scam which conned hundreds of people out of thousands of pounds. On the day you can register from 8.30am and have some breakfast. At 9am there’s an opening brief by Detective Superintendent John Folan, City of London Police, then the presentations by the SOCA CTech Unit and Professor Monica Whitty (http://monicawhitty.org/).
