A $35.5m contract for a turnkey project, to provide a security system, covering multiple sites, for the African Cup of Nations Football Championship in January 2012 in West Africa has gone to Israeli security product company Magal Security Systems.
The security company says that the vulnerability of sport games, as experienced by the Togo football team gun attack in the 2010 African Cup of Nations, was in the mind of the organisers. A holistic approach was adapted in which the Olympic arena is protected, rather than the gates only, with a strong emphasis on the perimeters of each site. The contract includes security coverage of football grounds, two stadiums and the Olympic villages. The system will be networked and integrated into several command and control centers by Fortis โ Magalโs Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) system. A built-in hierarchical structure will enable control of several smaller centers by a main regional control center.
Several detection layers will protect the perimeter of each site. Barricade II – a fence mounted locating sensor – will be used as a main layer. Multiple surveillance cameras supported by IVA (Intelligent Video Analytics) capabilities and hovering surveillance zeppelins will be deployed for organiserโs situation awareness. Various types of gates with access control, X-Ray screening devices, intercom and public announcement systems are included.
