Midwich Security to hold training courses developed to help businesses enter IP surveillance and networking markets

by msecadm4921

Following positive feedback received from its networking course in July, Midwich Security has developed a further series of one-day courses designed to help resellers and installers enter the security market or further expand their business offering.

Each theory-based course will be suitable for both technical and non-technical resellers wishing to developing their knowledge of IP surveillance and networking within the security market. There will be a range of equipment available at the venue which can be demonstrated at the end of each course.

“We’ve developed these courses as a way to help resellers expand their business or enter the security market for the first time,” explains Carl Hayesmore, Technical Sales Manager at Midwich Security. “There’s a wealth of opportunities in IP surveillance and networking but the technical nature of the technology can deter businesses from making the most of the market’s potential. We hope that these courses will give those who come along the knowledge and confidence to begin offering these solutions to their customers. The courses will be run by our security technology experts here at Midwich Security, who will be happy to aid your entry into the market.”

Basics of networking: Wednesday 22nd August – 10:00AM – 2:00PM
This course is suitable for all network-based services including IP video surveillance, AV, print, Pro-audio and access control and is designed to give a general understanding of the terms used within the networking environment. No previous knowledge of networking is required for the course meaning it is suitable for both technical and non-technical members of the team and for anyone who speaks to customers on IP elements as part of the sales process.

Course overview: Local Area Network: Typical LAN layout • IP Addressing and Subnet Masks • Network Layers • Networking Hardware • VLAN
Virtual Private Network
: What is a VPN • Where can you use them • Which hardware

Wide Area Network: Differences between LAN and WAN • Different Types of WAN • Moving data from the WAN to the LAN

Network cabling the do’s and don’ts: Golden rules of cabling • Wiring topologies

Introduction to surveillance: Thursday 6th September – 10:00AM – 2:00PM
Starting with details on how and why CCTV is used, the course moves onto the hardware aspects from camera technology through to transmission options, recording requirements and an overview of legal considerations. The course is aimed at those who are new to CCTV or have only basic knowledge and wish to be able to talk to their customers about how CCTV can help them. A background in AV, photography or networking is beneficial but not a requirement.

Course overview:

Camera Technology: Types and positioning • Resolutions • IR lighting

Lens selection: Types • Formats and focal lengths • Lens calculator

Recording types: DVR’s, NVR’s and software • Frame rates and duration • Compression and image quality

Transmission: Copper, IP, fibre and wireless

Terms and acronyms

The Data Protect Act 1998 and CCTV

Basics of IP surveillance: Wednesday 26th September – 10:00AM – 2:00PM
Starting with details on the benefits of IP video surveillance, the course moves onto the differences to be considered when designing an IP video surveillance system over a traditional CCTV system. Aimed at those who are interested in obtaining a greater understanding of networks and how they operate, the course emphasises the use of video products over network infrastructure and highlights the main considerations required for system design engineers, as well as sales people requiring more IP knowledge to enable then to sell IP solutions.

Course overview:

Network traffic considerations: Compression technologies • Resolution • Frame rates • Other factors affecting bandwidth • Methods of video transmission

Hardware and the essential differences to CCTV: Cameras • Recorders  • Encoders  • Network switching

Control methods: Web browser front end • Purpose designed control software • Decoders • Mobile apps

Network transmission distances: Methods of increasing network length limits

The courses will be held at Midwich Security’s Berkshire office and will include lunch. For further information on how to attend these courses, contact the Midwich Security team on 01379 647500 or [email protected].
