Safety campaign

by Mark Rowe

The Out of Your Hands campaign brings together The Telecommunications UK Fraud Forum (TUFF) and Financial Fraud Action UK. Aimed at young people, parents and teachers, it comes in three parts – Out of Your Hands (using a mobile phone responsibly); Out of Your Control (protecting your online identity); and Out of Your Pocket (about financial fraud).

As organisers say, children are using mobile phone apps; and children as young as three are accessing the internet. Most young people are carrying mobile phones for personal safety and keeping in touch. The downside is that our reliance on technology has created opportunity for crime, fraud and cyber-bullying – so we need to educate ourselves and young people about these risks and how to reduce risk and be more diligent when using mobile phones, online services, making financial transactions and how we identify and respond to emails and online adverts.

The site has National Curriculum resources and downloadable worksheets to help teachers address these issues with young people so they can protect themselves when using a mobile advice; making financial transactions and using digital media. Included are real life victim and perpetrator case studies and short films; tips and advice for staying safe online and on the streets; what to look for in common scams; and links of where to register your mobile device, report issues.
