PASS scheme reminder

by Mark Rowe

With more of the new PASS (Proof of Age Standard Scheme) cards in circulation, PASS calls on licensees (pub, bar and club operators) and door staff to be sure that staff on duty are familiar with the PASS Scheme and recognise and accept PASS hologrammed cards.

After the launch in June 2014, pictured, of the new 18-plus Design Standard, supported by Norman Baker MP, the then Lib Dem Minister of State for Crime Prevention, Chief Constable Adrian Lee, Licensing Lead for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and Bill Butler, Chief Executive of the Security Industry Authority (SIA – who license door staff) acceptance of PASS cards has been increasing across the country, according to the scheme organisers, with support from police and licensing officers.

PASS National Director, Marc Catchpole said: “New Year’s Eve is traditionally a busy time for the UK’s bars and clubs. There may be staff on duty who are not fully familiar with the changes we introduced to the look of PASS cards this June. Now would be a good time to refresh staff with information about the PASS Scheme and why it can be trusted as a reliable Proof of Age for all age restricted products. ”

“Our website – www.pass-scheme.org.uk – features a short video about PASS (produced with support from Licensing Solicitors, Poppleston Allen) and I would encourage people to view this and see the support the PASS Scheme has from Government, The Police, Trading Standards and The Security Industry Authority alike. When you see a PASS hologrammed card you can be confident of two things – 1) the widespread support behind the scheme and 2) the rigour that lies behind that issue of the card to that young person before you. Bear in mind that here is a young person with a genuine ID, which they’ve gone through a robust process to obtain, and money to spend in your establishment.”
