Pub drug screen

by msecadm4921

A drugs screening device was used as a condition of entry at a public house and a nightclub in Corby. Around 60 people were swabbed during the operation on Saturday night, July 28. Drugs were indicated on 16 of those who were swabbed and two men were found with Class B drugs on their person, one receiving an £80 penalty notice and the other man bailed to appear at Corby police station at a future date.

Traces of Class A drugs were found in the ladies’ toilets on both premises.

On the Friday night (July 27), plain clothes officers visited six licenced premises in the town and carried out various checks.

Bar staff in one of the premises were issued with an £80 penalty notice for supplying alcohol to a person who was drunk.

PC Rod Mackenzie, of Corby Safer Community Team, said: “The police activity was particularly well received by staff and doormen at the venues and we also received a lot of positive feedback from customers.

“We like to be proactive in support of our licensed premises in the town and ensure that people don’t take drugs into pubs and clubs.

“We are looking to use our police powers to combat drug and alcohol-related crime and disorder more effectively and extensively and we are planning more proactive operations later in the year.”

The police operations tied in with an Alcohol Week Of Action in Corby which saw the police working in partnership with Corby Borough Council and other agencies.

The borough council:-

* Carried out test purchase visits on Thursday (July 26) to more than ten premises, and there were no sales

* Worked with Pubwatch and off-licences to offer advice and guidance around fake ID, proxy sales, drug protocols etc and drug wipes were offered to licensees throughout the visits as a request via Pubwatch – more than 10 premises were visited

* CAN and Corby Borough Council health and fitness team visited RS components to offer alcohol advice and information during their break and lunch hour session. The response was positive.

* Environmental work completed at Canada Square on the Kingswood estate and along the street pastor routes (Rockingham Road) – this included the cutting back of foliage and the removal of rubbish.

Councillor Tom Beattie, leader of Corby Borough Council, said: “All the information coming to us from the partnership’s JAG4ALL identified serious concern about alcohol-related crime and disorder in Corby.
