Railway races warning

by Mark Rowe

Before York Races over the weekend, British Transport Police is calling on all race goers to be first past the post when it comes to staying safe.

Last year thousands of passengers travelled to and from York Races over the two day race meet, and police are expecting similar numbers to use the rail network again this weekend.

BTP officers will be out and about along a variety of routes and at York station over the weekend to take steps to ensure people reach their destinations safely, public order is maintained and that the large crowds of people are managed effectively.

Chief Inspector Derek Oโ€™Mara, who is coordinating BTP activity at the event, said: โ€œWe expect thousands of excited race-goers to use the rail network Friday and Saturday and our aim is to make sure that those travelling by train can attend the races safely and have a good day out.

โ€œBTP will have a large number of officers on hand to deal with the increased numbers. We will be robustly policing the railway and will deal swiftly with anyone who carries out violent or anti-social behaviour.

โ€œWith our rail industry partners, we will take a dim view of anyone who causes trouble having consumed excess amounts of alcohol.

He added: โ€œSome people become aggressive when they are heavily intoxicated, which results in them putting themselves, members of the public, rail staff and officers at risk. We will not tolerate this and would remind people that anti social behaviour can result in them being banned from travelling on the rail network and they could receive a criminal record which may affect their employment. Is it worth it for a few hours drinking?โ€
