Telecoms appeal

by Mark Rowe

The 0800 crime-reporting line Crimestoppers and partner Openreach (a BT Group Business) are appealing for information after malicious damage to the telecommunications network in Kings Cross, north London, left nearby businesses and homes without telephone and broadband services.

The incident was on the junction of Northdown Street and Pentonville Road (A501) at about 00.30hrs on Wednesday, November 18. The damage left parts of central London without communications services as engineers worked around the clock to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum.

Openreach and Crimestoppers offer rewards of up to £1000 for information on cable thieves that leads to an arrest and conviction. Information can be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or filling in the Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Regan Hook, Regional Manager for Crimestoppers in London, said: “Damaging the telecommunications network in this way was not only reckless but dangerous and someone could have been hurt. There are people out there who know who is responsible and I would urge you to contact Crimestoppers anonymously.

“We don’t take personal details and we can’t trace calls or information given online. We don’t want to know who you are, just what you know. Help us to ensure that these individuals cannot strike again.”

The charity Crimestoppers and Openreach began working together in February 2011 and since then have been encouraging more people to help stop malicious damage being caused to this national infrastructure.

Richard Ginnaw, from Openreach Security, said: “The attack occurred at separate locations 30 metres apart along the busy A501 Pentonville Road in the heart of London. Our engineers have worked tirelessly to restore service to the businesses and homes impacted by this crime within our capital. We are also working closely with the Police to find the individuals responsible.

“If you saw anything suspicious within the Kings Cross area on Wednesday evening, please do not hesitate to call Crimestoppers and help us to bring the people responsible for this crime to justice.”

BT uses many security measures to protect its network, which includes its alarm technology RABIT (Rapid Assessment BT Incident Tracker) which was activated within seconds of these incidents happening.

You can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through an Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
