Wireless alarm for Primark renovation

by Mark Rowe

For the renovation of the flagship Primark store in central Birmingham, fire protection equipment manufacturer Bull Products is supplying its Cygnus alarm.

The £60m Primark project is a 150,000+ sq ft space at the Pavillions centre, and will see one of the biggest Primarks in the UK. The main contractors started work early 2017 and have installed the Cygnus with a bespoke sounder delay firmware, which provides an early warning system around the site. This feature allows workers to prepare for evacuation when they hear the first intermittent alarm.

The early warning the product firm says can prevent costly consequences of false alarms; once the first alert is heard, the system is checked by site authorities and is either silenced or a site evacuation is made; depending on the incident. Alarm units are in place on all four floors, and will be until the project is complete in December 2018.

Bull Products describe the Cygnus as a radio system for wireless emergency fire, first aid, and intruder alarms, as been used on some of the largest construction projects across the UK. The makers add that the product has been designed for use on construction sites with changing site conditions.

Ross Markham, managing director at Bull Products, says: “We’re delighted to be working on this large project and supplying our Cygnus alarm systems during the work on the new megastore. Our alarm system can be used across numerous levels and sites so in the case of a real alarm, the message is communicated to every device within the site – this ensures workers are protected in an emergency. We’ve won some exciting projects recently, all of which emphasise the benefits of our Cygnus systems which protect construction sites and workers when it matters the most.”

Meanwhile Bull also recently secured two other contracts to supply its Cygnus product to the commercial skyscraper on 52 Lime Street (The Scalpel), and the high-rise building on 70 St Mary Axe, also known as London’s ‘Can of Ham’.
