“May you live in interesting times” has been used by the Chinese for hundreds if not thousands of years, as a curse and a blessing, and interesting times are what we are experiencing across the world as the recession ebbs and flows in various countries, says Mark Tibbenham, MD of GJD, the Greater Manchester-based manufacturers of exterior detection equipment.

He says that the UK’s interesting times have not done the harm some thought might arise within the security industry. He said: “There was a school of thought, popular in some sectors, that the recession would lead to dramatic cutbacks in expenditure right across the security market as businesses and individuals strove for financial savings in all areas of activity. I’m pleased to say that this has not been the case with a very high proportion of those needing some form of security having the good sense to realise that cutting back on protecting premises, business, homes and valuables in recessionary times when crime rates usually increase is folly.

“As a mainstream manufacturer of a range of items used universally within the security industry I am pleased to add that in most businesses with security systems already in place or under consideration, CCTV and intruder alarms activated by detectors, with physical security measures, remain the preferred options. Given the success of such integrated systems and the incredible value for money they offer combined with reliability of operation and long life this is hardly surprising. In simple terms security has never been as affordable and effective, something the industry should be proud of and customers delighted.”
