SSE adds division

by Mark Rowe

The electrical contractor SSE Enterprise Contracting has a new division to offer fire and security services.

The division based in Tayside was formed after the company gained accreditation on the BAFE SP203-1 scheme and certification with the SSAIB inspectorate. Both accreditations involved audits of SSE Enterprise Contracting’s management and installation works.

The formation of the Fire and Security Division was conceived and led by SSE Enterprise Contracting Project Engineer Brian Christie. He said: “Having these accreditations allows us to tender for a greater range of products as many clients, such as local councils and building contractors, will specify a need for either one or both accreditations or an equivalent.

“We are currently operating in Perth but hope to expand the division to service the North and eventually branch out to cover the whole of the UK. I believe the business one day has the potential to sit alongside our other business divisions, such as civils, electrical and Instrumentation, and high voltage engineering.”

The contractor can now self-deliver any fire and security works in electrical contracts, rather than employ sub-contractors. This has resulted in works being carried out for the wider SSE Group, namely SSE Power Distribution, SSE Renewable Generation and SSE Group Security. Recent projects have included a new fire alarm system at the New Link Building at SSE Plc’s headquarters in Perth, and work for long-time clients including Eneco UK and Morrison Construction.

Ian Holden, SSE Enterprise Contracting’s M&E Delivery Manager, said: “We identified we were spending a lot of money on sub-contractors and realised we could offer a more competitive package to our clients if we were able to deliver these disciplines in-house.

“Since achieving the accreditations we have grown to having three operatives working full time on fire and security works in Perth and plan to continue this growth across the business. It is an exciting addition to our scope of services and displays our ambitions of being the leading contractor in the industry.”
