Video Management Servers Co. (VMS Co) supplies optimized, video management and AI analytics servers with a choice of Linux or Microsoft operating systems. While mostย video management and AI analytics platforms support either operating system, Linux is considered the more secure and stable, the company adds; whether for recording servers, analytics workstations, viewing clients and appliance hardware.
Nick Bowden, MD of VMS Co.,ย says:ย โLinuxย provides strongerย systemย securityย than Microsoft, through its user permissions, service isolation,ย firewallsย andย aย minimal or โlightโ installation.ย It requires fewer software upgradesย andย removesย theย automated, unplannedย updatesย presentย inย Microsoft Windowsย thatย can often disruptย system operation and uptime.ย Linuxโs smallerย โattack surfaceโย also reduces exposure toย malware and other cyber threats, removing the need for antivirus software.
โLinuxย lowers the totalย cost ofย ownership.ย Linuxย Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, whichย we often use, is free, eliminating licenseย and upgradeย fees.ย It alsoย usesย fewer background resources, improvingย system efficiency. Onย the same hardware, we are seeingย aย 25 per centย increase inย analyticsย processingย capability,ย along ย reaterย stabilityย under heavy workloads.
โAlthoughย Linuxย requiresย familiarity withย itsย terminal orย command-lineย interface,ย which can beย challengingย for some technicians,ย professionals working regularly with videoย management systemsย doย not struggle. The VMSโs ownย graphicย interfaceย soonย takesย over,ย and the latestย Linuxย workstations and PCsย nowย offer aย more familiar,ย Windows-likeย front end.ย Another advantage of Linux is thatย itsย elevated passwordย hierarchy preventsย usersย from downloading irrelevant apps to security hardware;ย so often the cause ofย slow system operation and security threats.โ
The company adds that while it can install either Linux or Microsoft operating systemsย acrossย its CCTV servers, workstations, clients and appliances, Linux isย becomingย theย preference of usersย for its security, stability and efficiency.
