Cyber representative to the Gulf

by Mark Rowe

Simon Hosking has been made the UK’s new Cyber Security Industry Representative to the Gulf region, the Department for International Trade reports. The DIT says he joins a cadre of experts supporting UK cyber security companies to export, which already includes the UK Cyber Security Ambassador, Dr Henry Pearson, and the UK Cyber Security Industry Representative to North America, MWR’s Michael Powell, announced last month.

Simon was 20 years a diplomat with the Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence. He joins the Department from BAE Systems plc, where he was responsible for securing government cyber and security deals, with a focus on regional security partnerships in the Middle and Far East.

Simon will engage with public and private sector stakeholders in region to understand their needs and identify business opportunities for UK cyber companies. With support from the London-based cyber security sector team, the National Cyber Security Centre and other government departments, Simon will work relevant British Embassies to help British business, particularly SMEs, to secure contracts and grow.

Dr Henry Pearson said: “Simon brings extensive diplomatic experience of national security issues that include cyber and the protection of national infrastructure. He joins DIT after spending five years in industry so is well-placed to represent UK cyber business interests in the region. I am confident Simon will help identify opportunities for British businesses to responsibly export their skills and technologies in a fast-growing market.”
