When it comes to security, video surveillance systems are often the first choice. Video recordings provide pictures of incidents and can aid in tracing of past incidents. However, it is even better if the software informs the operator in real time about unwanted events. This is exactly what intelligent video analytics (IVA) can do. The use of a video management system (VMS) with integrated video analytics increases efficiency of a video surveillance system, says the developer Securiton.

One of the biggest challenges with video surveillance is the sheer volume of data. Cameras capture real-time footage every minute. In a system with hundreds of cameras, the magnitude of the problem becomes clear. Recording video images over hours, days, and weeks is expensive due to the storage space and hardware required. Besides, it is impossible for security personnel to view all recorded video material and to find relevant image content without tech help. Also, operator attention can drop after a few minutes of viewing video material. This can mean that really suspicious events escape the operator.

With IVA, video recordings can be selectively searched or only camera images that are of interest to the user can be recorded and displayed using real-time analytics. This not only saves storage space, but enables efficient processing of alarms or intervention by personnel before something happens.

The VMS IPS VideoManager 3D in use with the analytics module IPS Dome Tracker offers a solution for alarm processing. Alarm objects, such as a prison inmate in an escape attempt, are recognised by the video analytics and tracked automatically across a site. If the inmate reaches the end of the detection zone of a camera, the system automatically hands over to the adjacent camera. Control room personnel can focus on what is happening without a need to manually control PTZ-enabled cameras, make changes to the display, or perform other system management tasks.
