BIM software for hotel doors

by Mark Rowe

Pictured are two new multi-million-pound hotels – the Park Hotel and the Lighthouse Hotel in Paignton, Devon, next to each other on the seafront opposite the pier, by the Singapore-based business, the Fragrance Group.

Kay Elliott Architects used Openings Studio BIM software Project Specification Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland to make time and cost savings during the design process. Products were thus specified for over 1,000 doors, including DC300G-HF, DC500 and DC135 Door Closers, J1000 Door Furniture, and a Key Prime Master Key System, with a total contract value of over £60,000.

Openings Studio is a BIM software tool that was developed for door scheduling and visualisation. An architect can use the tool during the design, installation and management of door openings. Otherwise, specifying a thousand doorsets can be time-intensive. Using traditional methods, information would be provided in separate schedules and documents, which would require a Revit operator to manually create and update, and someone else to then check for errors.

As a project develops, information may become out of date and require some doors to be flagged up and re-sent for advice, and leaving the prospect of human error still. Hence, Kay Elliott Architects began to work closely with ASSA ABLOY Project Specification Group to integrate Openings Studio with their own Revit model, allowing them to find all the relevant information and ironmongery schedules in a single place, delivered in one document.

David Shields, National Specification Manager, ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, said: “As Openings Studio flags up any queries and automatically updates in live time, it is easy to see any discrepancies and changes within the schedules. By re-sharing the model information, it then also allows us at ASSA ABLOY to view the changes and feedback to the architects.”
