Euro cylinder locks

by Mark Rowe

Most properties in the UK will have a euro cylinder lock, writes Kevin Jones of Home Secure Shop.

It is the part of the door where you insert the key into. It sits inside the door handles and can be identified by its light bulb shape.

Door cylinder snapping is on the rise. With everyday tools a burglar can quite easily get past a standard door cylinder in less than 30 seconds. Every other euro profile cylinder on the market is vulnerable to burglary attack by snapping of the cylinder because, once snapped, the central cam of the door cylinder comes away leaving the internal mechanism of the door lock accessible to the burglar.

Any door cylinder fitted before 2012 is likely to have a cylinder at risk as high security cylinders were not widely available until after this period. If you are unsure if a cylinder is high security you can check the front face of the cylinder for any security marks or ‘stars’.
The current industry standard for cylinders is ‘three star security’. Some other cylinders may carry only ‘one star rating’ and it should be noted that you will need to combine high security ‘two star security’ door handles with these to achieve ‘three star rating’. The easiest way to upgrade your security is to install ‘three star security’ cylinders.

They are many manufacturers these days of ‘three star cylinders’, each with their own features. The market for euro cylinder locks is expanding and becoming more advanced and safer for the consumer by the day. Some have security keys, which must be registered to the lock owner. There are also options for having locks built to use the same key.
