iPad locker

by Mark Rowe

Traka, a keyless electronic lockers, intelligent access control and key management product firm, showcased the Traka iPad Locker at The BETT Show 2014 between January 22 and 24, Traka reported increased demand from education for a solution that could protect iPads from theft and damage but still provide a way of issuing and keeping track of the asset.

Feedback from the event also showed that physically protecting iPads was not the only concern, according to the firm. Educationalists were also looking for a way to keep all classroom devices synced, charged and ready for lessons.

Robert Smith, Managing Director for Traka, said: “From visiting the show, it is clear that educational apps and online software is growing in sophistication and will soon be intrinsic to modern learning. But an app is only as good as the device it is running on. Over the course of the show we heard many horror stories about how schools were storing iPads, and consequently the financial implications of the theft and damage of the valuable assets. The ‘trolley system’ was a particular theme, where iPads are simply returned onto a trolley after use and rolled into a cupboard. This apparently common practice leaves the valuable assets vulnerable to damage and makes the classroom an easy target for thieves.

“When demonstrating the Traka iPad Locker, visitors were able to see how the system enables safe storage but flexible use. The individual user codes gives students responsibility and flexibility but also accountability. However, from speaking to visitors we learnt that securing the asset was not the only thing of interest to teachers and learning providers, the functionality of the software also peaked interest. The Traka iPad Locker allows the IT technician or teacher to sync all iPads, meaning that apps can be downloaded onto all of the devices in one go. The integrated charge function also means that devices are fully charged before use.

“The practical features of the system offers a simple solution of not only protecting the devices but it also enables easy set-up before students arrive, helping to avoid a teacher’s worst nightmare, a chaotic start to a lesson.”
