Marking offer

by Mark Rowe

Free security marking is offered for Land Rover Defenders in Derbyshire over the next two weeks. Some 18 Land Rover owners have already taken advantage of the offer to defend their vehicles with free UV liquid kits at Bakewell Agricultural Business Centre on Monday, November 19.

This clear liquid is painted onto several high-value parts of Land Rovers and the owners’ details stored on a database. If a Land Rover is stolen or parts are stripped from it and later recovered, a unique code hidden in the liquid can be retrieved and matched on the database. Police then can reunite the owners with their vehicles. It also acts as a deterrent to would-be thieves, who know how kits such as Smartwater and Selecta DNA work.

PCSO Jonathan Taylor was on hand to help owners mark their Land Rovers at Monday’s security marking event, where a number of security items were on sale. He will be doing the same again from 10am to 3pm on Monday, November 26 and Monday, December 3. All Land Rover Defender owners have to do is turn up in the car park behind the Agricultural Business Centre.

PCSO Taylor said: “The response at the first security marking day was pleasing but we now want more Land Rover Defender owners to take advantage of the free kit. We have a low crime rate in our area but when vehicle crime does occur, Land Rover Defenders can be targeted because they have high-value parts that can be stripped off. Marking those parts is a quick way to add an extra level of security to your vehicle that can help protect it from theft. These kits are free and we have plenty more to use over the next two Mondays, so I’d urge Defender owners to come down and take advantage of the offer.”

To qualify for a free security marking kit, Land Rover owners must live in the Derbyshire Dales or High Peak area. They must also take their vehicle’s V5 document to prove ownership and be able to show they live in the Dales or High Peak.
