Radar-based threat-detection

by Mark Rowe

Rapiscan Systems, Inc, a US-based supplier of security inspection systems, has announced the ounterBomber, a radar-based threat-detection system. According to the firm it can identify concealed person-borne threats, such as suicide vests and weapons, at stand-off distances.

Using optional remote networking, CounterBomber’s video-steered radar technology can identify a threat even when the system operator is hundreds of metres away, it is claimed. The system is the company says for locations such as government buildings, transit systems, and military installations that are targets for terrorist attacks.

CounterBomber has been tested by the US Government, and successfully deployed by the US Armed Forces in all recent major conflicts, as well as other volatile areas around the globe, since 2008. While originally designed to identify suicide vests, the CounterBomber can also detect other concealed person-borne threats such as handguns, machine pistols, pipe bombs, and grenades, all while maintaining a low false alarm rate, it is claimed.

Brad Buswell, President, Rapiscan Systems North America, said: “We believe CounterBomber is superior to any other comparable system on the market and provides a tangible and practical solution to the more than 3500 suicide bombings that have taken place over the past three decades. The solution detects threats with tremendous accuracy, but also is intuitive to operate, allowing easy deployment in a variety of situations and threat levels.

“Rapiscan has always been committed to providing cutting-edge solutions that solve even the most difficult security challenges that our customers face. The addition of CounterBomber to our product offering further supports this mission and allows us to provide customers with an even greater range of products to support their unique needs.”

The product once in operation can automatically assess approaching personnel for hidden threats – without the need for operator interpretation. The makers add that the product’s intuitive and rugged design reduces training and maintenance costs, and its plug-and-play enables it to be integrated into the command and control (C2) network.
