A fair chunk of the book – about risky jobs and workplaces – covers private security matters, such as land-mine removal, ‘the bodyguard’ and ‘the hostage negotiator’, which features veteran Arish Turle. Control Risks man Nigel Churton is among those acknowledged at the start of the book by Adie, herself no stranger to working in war zones and other risky places. A couple of other chapters cover ‘the Northern Ireland policeman’ – where putting police shirts on the washing line could prove fatal to officer and family – and ‘the bank robber’, which some may find of dubious morality. (Work?) That chapter though is written mostly in the past tense, a sign of how armed robbery has become too dangerous (for the criminal) and hence out of date (in favour of other crime). By simply letting someone in the field tell their story, most pages have something surprising.
