Garry Evanson will be the next chairman of the Security Institute. He’s been chosen by the institute board of directors, after Emma Shaw announced that she was stepping down. The change will come into effect on April 14.
Garry is Head of Security at Westminster Abbey, and spoke about some of this work at the Security TWENTY 14 event at Heathrow last autumn. Earlier he was Head of Security Operations for the banknote and passport manufacturers DeLaRue; and was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Military Police, having served in Iraq, Bosnia and west Africa.
On the academic side he gained a master’s in Policing Science from Portsmouth, a diploma in security management through Loughborough, and PGCE in Higher Education from Surrey. He’s been vice-chairman for about three years; and for the institute has taken part in the academic board, done interview assessing for the chartered register security professionals (like the outgoing chairman he’s a Chartered Security Professional, CSyP), and work on the annual Wilf Knight Award for students.
Talking of CSyPs, six new Chartered Security Professionals have been admitted so far this year. They are Fraser Brown, director of operations for IDG Security Middle East; Jim Castle, MD of Corporate and Executive Solutions; Bob Boote, Director Risk, CE Group; Stefanos Katsimpiris, Security and HSE Manager, ASSYSTEM (Appointed to Technip); and Mike Williams, Managing Director of MIRIS. A celebratory dinner hosted by Lord Carlile at the House of Commons in March was attended by 142 guests , and certificates of admittance were presented to 12 recent CSyPs. The next CSyP meeting will be held at Cheltenham Racecourse on June 2. A guest speaker is from GCHQ.
