Big Weekend

Radio 1’s Big Weekend was also a big step for Showsec, the stewarding and event security company says, in terms of the development of their operation in Scotland.

The company was working at the Big Weekend from May 23 to 25 whose line-up features Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Katy Perry and One Direction.

Showsec are working on other events with the BBC north of the border in 2014. Scott Anderson, Showsec’s Regional Manager for Scotland, called the Big Weekend a landmark agreement for the company in Scotland.

“The Scottish office has been open for four years now and this is a major step forward as we look to develop that operation. Scotland is the place to be over the next few months with so many exciting events and we are delighted to be figuring prominently in many of them, while also providing many job opportunities for people in the region.”

Showsec have landed a three-year contract for the T in the Park Festival in July. In the countdown to this weekend, Showsec were on duty at the Riverside Museum for the BBC Radio 1Xtra Live event. More than 50,000 people attended Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Glasgow Green, while an extra DJ-led event in George Square was headlined by Tiesto on the Friday night.

Anderson said beforehand: “Scottish crowds are renowned for being quite lively and rowdy, so we are expecting it to be one big party from start to finish.”

Showsec had 300 staff on duty at the Weekend which was headlined by Coldplay on the Saturday and Katy Perry on the Sunday. Other artists performing over the two days included Tinie Tempah, The Vamps, Calvin Harris, Bastille and Pharrell.

Events in England stewarded by the company include Bloodstock and Download, pictured. See the May and June print issues of the magazine for an interview with Showsec MD Mark Harding.
