Power firm’s integration

by Mark Rowe

Electrified fencing has been integrated with more than a thousand 360-degree cameras into a central command centre in Cardiff for the utility Western Power Distribution (WPD). This integrating of technologies by Reliance High-Tech (RHT) has made for standardised security measures across hundreds of sites, says RHT.

WPD distributes electricity to 7.8 million customers across the Midlands, South Wales and the South West. Clive Black-Borow – Senior Account Manager CNI and Utilities of Reliance High-Tech, says: “WPD is continuing to focus on improving its operations and investing in the most robust security systems available,. The result today is an intelligent alarm management system, electrified perimeter protection and CCTV verification which allow WPD’s security controllers to respond immediately to thefts, incidents and hazards.”

In 2011 when WPD expanded its coverage into the East and West Midlands, a challenge was to integrate newly acquired operations into the business and develop a system that would provide security for hundreds of sites across over 55,000 km2. Many of the sites are also in remote parts; and Reliance High-Tech had to work with telecommunications operators to provide secure, stable connections to the command centre.

Huw Evans Distribution Manager Projects of WPD, says: “We operate in a highly regulated and challenging environment and we are delighted with the long term working arrangement we have with Reliance High Tech. We will continue to work with Reliance to develop our security control platform and fulfil our safety and security obligations and achieve our mutual objective of continuous improvement.”
