Project Vigilant in Oxford

by Mark Rowe

Thames Valley Police have launched Project Vigilant in Oxford city centre. Their aim; reducing sexual offending in and due to the night time economy.

The force reports a 12pc increase in non-domestic sexual offences in the Oxford local policing area, as 368 were recorded in 2018 and 413 in 2019. Hence Project Vigilant, to target predatory behaviour. Uniformed and undercover officers will be carrying out patrols to identify people who may be displaying signs of predatory behaviour such as sexual harassment, inappropriate touching and loitering. Officers will intervene.

Detective Inspector James Senior, of Oxford CID based at Oxford police station said: “Just one sexual offence in Oxford is too many. My team and I are committed to ensuring that the local community can have an enjoyable night out without the fear of being sexually assaulted.

“We have found that utilising undercover officers and deploying them on the street has meant that we have been able to witness this behaviour first hand and intervene more quickly. We are aware that perpetrators will often target people walking home from bars and clubs. Our patrols reflect this and I am keen to make this a hostile place for perpetrators wanting to commit sexual offences.

“This behaviour is clearly unacceptable and will not be tolerated. If you see someone acting suspiciously, please call Thames Valley Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. You can also approach an officer or speak to the nearest pub or club staff member.

“Furthermore, if you have been affected by a sexual offence, please report it to us. You can do this by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency. We have specially trained officers that can support you in any way they can. There is also an online crime reporting service if you would rather not speak to anyone.

Or, if you wish to remain anonymous, you can report any information to the crime-reporting charity line Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. For more advice visit the Thames Valley Police website – https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/rsa/rape-and-sexual-assault/.
