3D X-ray equipment was in action in the reception area of the recent INTERSEC Security Exhibition and Conference 2004.
Visitors’ bags were screened by 3DX-RAY Ltd’s recently launched AXIS-3D technology which offers 3D images coupled with fast throughput, according to the manufacturers.
Conventional X-ray screening for bags and luggage provides a flat, two-dimensional projection of the inspected contents which can be difficult to interpret; whereas this new 3D imaging system gives a much more realistic representation which is easier to assess, it is claimed. The product makes the scanning process more straightforward for the operator, potentially avoiding mistakes, reducing false alarms and increasing throughput, the makers say. The technology mimics the way that our eyes operate by providing two slightly different views of the same object; when these are fused by the brain an accurate impression of depth and perspective is given, according to the makers.
The system is housed in a Rapiscan chassis, and is now part of their product portfolio (as the 3D20).
What they say
3DX-RAY’s Chief Executive, Nick Fox, said: "The methods and preferred targets of criminals and terrorists are evolving at a rapid rate, and so must approaches and technologies aimed at tackling them. AXIS-3D® is very much in tune with the need for sophisticated security solutions, coupled with ease of use for security personnel and minimal disruption to everyday activities."
