Next month sees the inaugural International Sports Event Management Conference in central London, where the topics include security and protection of VIPs.
The ISEM conference is at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre, London on November 22 and 23. Attenders, according to the organisers, include specialists working on FIFA World Cup, London 2012, International Olympic Committee, IRB Rugby World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup, World Swimming Championships, Pan American Games, African Cup of Nations, European Athletics Championships, and World Gymnastics Championships.

“I can’t recall a single event which has previously assembled such an array of respected specialists, each with something to add and knowledge to share,” said Nigel Rushman, event director of ICC Cricket World Cup and conference organiser. “The conference will provide a forum for in which these experts can share their experience to help delegates succeed in a sector in which the bar is being set ever higher as increased investment and professionalism drives higher standards.” Among the headline speakers are Paul Deighton, CEO of the London 2012 Olympic Games Organising Committee; and Heinz Palme, who was responsible for event management at FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany.

Speakers on day two include, on protocol and VIPs, South African close protection man Rory Steyn. Rory accompanied President Mandela internationally for five years as team leader of his close protection unit. He has been responsible for the security of numerous events worldwide and is contracted to South African national teams to provide security to visiting teams.
