British organisations should step up security in the wake of Osama Bin Laden’s death, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) is urging.
"While the official terror alert for the UK remains at severe, the BSIA is reinforcing the Government’s message of increased vigilance against potential reactionary terrorist attacks," said James Kelly, Chief Executive of the BSIA.
The Coalition Government’s Foreign Secretary, William Hague, has warned of the risk of retaliatory attacks against the UK, with embassies and government buildings already on high alert.
The BSIA spoke of the important role that effective security can play in dealing with terrorism. James Kelly added: "As we have already seen from the 7/7 bombings and Glasgow airport attack, the private security industry plays an essential part in detecting and solving terror crimes. However, it is also important to recognise the importance of a strong security presence in deterring further crimes. CCTV systems, physical security, access control and the presence of uniformed security personnel can all work effectively to provide an holistic approach to ensure maximum security, protecting businesses against all manner of crimes.
"In the wake of the death of Osama Bin Laden, areas at particular risk of falling victim to retaliatory attack in the UK might include public sector and government buildings, the transport network and crowded city centres. As such, the BSIA recommends for organisations of all kinds to consider what additional security measures may be of particular value."
