The government is re-consulting over proposals to regulate the motor salvage industry. The Home Office consulted in April 2000; The Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001 followed in April 2001. This new consultation seeks views on the detail of the regulations.
Proposed measures will require operators to: register with the local authority; maintain records of purchases and disposals; carry out identification checks of vendors and purchasers; allow the police the right of entry to premises and the right of search without warrant. The Home Office is asking how long operators should be required to keep records, and the identification to be required by operators from vendors and purchasers. You can download the full consultation paper from the Home Office website.
