The first round of security grants to shops in deprived areas, totalling nearly œ3m, have been released by the Home Office. Among the larger gainers are St Leonards, near Hastings with nearly œ235,000 to improve the security of up to 200 highly victimised shops with door and window locks, burglar alarms, toughened glass and security lighting. On average, œ1,000 of security improvements will go to each shop covered. Another œ12m will go to shops over the next two years. Other areas with grants (the scheme dates from June 2001) include Solihull (œ60,000 for shopping centres in the three most deprived wards of north Solihull with CCTV, a radio link system and security lighting); Sunderland (nearly œ45,000 to equip 50 retailers for a Radio Safe project); and Plymouth (œ19,000 to help Devonport Traders Partnership by providing CCTV, alarms and improved lighting to 60 businesses).
